Fourth Annual Chopin Piano Competition
A Night of Chopin: Fourth Annual Chopin Piano Competition took place on February 19, 2011. As in past years, the popularity of the event nearly exceeded the capacity of the room, for which we had chosen the Sulzberger Parlor due to its elegant, intimate atmosphere so well-fitting the enjoyment of romantic piano music, and where the best instrument on campus is located: an impressive 1923 Steinway 9” grand. Classical music lovers from the Columbia community were first provided an overview of the importance of Fryderyk Chopin for Polish history and tradition, and then enjoyed the performances of eleven competitors, followed by a 30-minute break for refreshments in anticipation of the judges' verdict. The winners were: 1st place: Stephen Bowden- Ballade No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 52 2nd place: Paulo Brito - Fantaisie in F Minor, Op. 49 3rd place: Julia Sayles - Nocturne Op. 9, No. 1 in B-flat Minor Prizes were funded by the Eastern Central European Center. Sponsored in part by the Arts Initiative at Columbia University. This funding is made possible through a generous gift from The Gatsby Charitable Foundation. |
