The Night of Chopin: A Piano Competition has become a long-standing tradition at Columbia University and Barnard College. Generations of student leaders gathered in the Polish Student Society strive every year to showcase Columbia and Barnard talent in a setting of classical music. Community support for the event has been demonstrated not only by reliable crowds of students attending the performances year after year, but also by warmly acknowledged financial and logistical contributions by the University and individual departments.
The Sixth Annual Chopin Piano competition took place on Saturday, March 2, 2013 in the traditional setting of Sulzberger Parlor featuring the best piano on campus: an impressive 1923 Steinway 9” grand. About 80 guests attended. The event was opened by an overview of Frederic Chopin’s life and oeuvre presented by Aneta Turlik. Ten pianists competed; their performances were followed by a 30-minute break for refreshments in anticipation of the judges' verdict.
The winners were as follows:
1st place: Yoshiaki David Ko – Sonata No. 3 in B minor, I. Allegro Maestoso Op. 58
2nd place: Wonji Yi – Bolero Op. 19
3rd place: Wei-Li Suen – Scherzo No. 2 in B-flat Minor Op. 31
Honorable Mention: Andrew Dugué – Prelude No. 15 in D-flat Major & No. 16 in B-flat Minor Op. 28
The Polish Student Society at Columbia University and Barnard College wishes to thank the judges and pianists without whom this event would not be possible, as well as our kind sponsors. Our gratitude goes to the East Central European Center for the prizes to the winning contestants. The event was sponsored in part by the Arts Initiative at Columbia University. This funding is made possible through a generous gift from The Gatsby Charitable Foundation. The event was co-sponsored by Barnard College Activities Office, Student Governing Association, and Columbia College Student Council.
